These changes were introduced to reduce the catastrophic effect oil spills can have on the environment. In 2000, a sixth of all pollution incidents occurred through the incorrect storage of oil. Spills like this are toxic to small plants and animals and leaks into rivers can decimate the river population.
The Environment Agency is the government body that enforces the oil storage regulations. It also exists to advise companies on bringing their oil storage up to standard.
Ways to avoid detect and control oil spills and leaks
Avoid spills!
Invest in a bunded tank. In domestic and small industrial tanks, this usually consists of a doubled skinned tank. In larger industrial fuel storage the bunding is usually constructed of masonry, steel or strong plastic, coupled with an impervious bottom to prevent any oil spilt from the tank, polluting the surrounding area. Our partners Titan supply a range of bunded tanks for domestic and commercial use.
Detect leaks and thefts!
Our Watchman Alarms are revolutionary electronic measuring gauges that will set off an alarm at the receiver in the house when there is a dramatic drop in your oil level, detecting leaks or thefts. Learn more now Watchman Device
